Minimum Qualifications:

Requires licensure as an Addiction Counselor by the ND Board of Addition Counseling Examiners and two years of experience in a private or public facility as an Addiction Counselor. A master’s degree will substitute for one year of experience.

If unable to find qualified applicants, will consider underfilling as an Addiction Counselor I (4132), which requires licensure as an Addiction Counselor by the ND Board of Addiction Counselor Examiners.

*If unable to find qualified applicants, will consider underfilling as an Addiction Counselor Intern (4131), which requires approval for internship placement by the ND Board of Addiction Counselor Examiners.

Preference will be given to applicants with ASAM knowledge, skills in Motivational Interviewing, and experience working with Native American Consumers, and/or adolescents, and/or consumers with co-occurring disorders.

Strong computer skills are required.  Must successfully complete a standard background and criminal records check.

Summary of Work:

Become one of the nine Licensed Addiction Counselors providing substance abuse services to the Lake Region.  Learn or expand your knowledge in the provision of evidenced-based services, become involved in NIATx service improvement projects, and work collaboratively with your colleagues and referral sources to help achieve the mission of the North Dakota Department of Human Services, which is: “to provide quality, efficient, and effective human services, which improve the lives of people”.

Essential job functions involve conducting addiction evaluations, developing person centered treatment plans, providing individual, group, and family counseling.  Additional job duties to be divided up between these two positions include:

  • Adolescent programming, to include evaluation, outpatient and aftercare services, involvement in drug court
  • Assistance with Adult Matrix Program, particularly taking a lead role in facilitating the Matrix Social Support Group, and assistance with Adult Aftercare Services.
  • Integrated Dual Diagnosis Treatment:  Lake Region is in the planning phase of implementing this evidenced based service for adults with co-occurring serious mental health and substance abuse disorders
  • Duties includes some daytime intake and emergency services responsibilities, and along with 20 clinical staff, rotates into after-hours crisis line on a periodic basis.
Lake Region Human Service Center is working with NIATx (Network for the Improvement of Addiction Treatment https://www.niatx.net/Home/Home.aspx?CategorySelected=HOME  aimed at strengthening consumer engagement, retention and recovery, and this position will play an important role in this initiative.
